10th and 11th Sitting of the Security Services Control Committee

At the sitting held on 4 October 2017 and closed to the public, the Security Services Control Committee reviewed and accepted the Military Intelligence Agency Activity Report.
The Committee members ascertained that the Military Intelligence Agency Activity Report provides a comprehensive insight into the most important segments of the security agency’s work in the reporting period and noted that the Agency had efficiently performed the tasks within its purview.
In view of the global security environment and the security challenges in the region, the Committee noted that the Military Intelligence Agency, as part of the security-intelligence system, has successfully conducted the intelligence tasks important for the security of the Republic of Serbia, in line with its duties. The frequent terror attacks and the rising number of victims in the biggest European cities are an indicator of the importance and need to strengthen the intelligence structures in the Republic of Serbia. In view of this, the Committee emphasized the importance and high quality of the job done by the Military Intelligence Agency.
The Committee also noted the Agency’s significant contribution to the development of bilateral military and military-economic cooperation. Commending the participation of the members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in missions abroad, under the patronage of the UN and EU, the Committee highlighted the important role the Military Intelligence Agency plays in monitoring the situation in the areas they are engaged and offering intelligence support in the realization of their missions. The Committee fully supports the continued coordinated work of the security services on the protection of the national interests and security of the citizens of the Republic of Serbia.
On the same day the Committee held another sitting closed to the public where it reviewed and accepted the Ministry of Defence Inspector General of the Services Activity Report.
The Committee concluded that the security services should continue to implement the Inspector General’s recommendations and commended the Inspector General’s positive assessments of the legality and regularity of the Ministry of Defence security services’ work. The cooperation between the Committee and the Inspector General is a significant element of the civil and democratic control of the Ministry of Defence security services’ work which contributes to its legality and efficiency. The Committee fully supports the Inspector General in the supervision of the Ministry of Defence security services’ work and believes this type of control to be important for the improvement of the legality and regularity of the security services’ work.
The sittings were chaired by Committee Chairman MA Igor Becic, and attended by the following Committee members: Marija Obradovic, Dragan Sormaz and Vladimir Djukanovic, and substitute member Vladan Zagradjanin.
